About van Gülpen Coffee Roasters
Van Gülpen roasters was founded in the year 1832, and thanks to almost a century of hard work and patience, it is now one of the oldest roasters in the world. The family company started off selling unroasted green beans- back then it was usual to roast your own coffee at home. Thirty years later, thanks to the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the young Alexius van Gülpen, the company transformed into a roastery and started offering pre-roasted coffee to its customers.
The devastating effects of the second world war consumed the company, meaning that the next generation had to start basically anew. Shortly after they were hit with another wave of misfortune. The German market was suddenly being dominated by the sales of cheap coffee, and the pressure on prices forced many businesses to close down. Luckily, the innovative spirit seems to be genetic in the van Gülpen family, and instead of following the market and drastically reducing prices, the company transformed itself into one of the first producers of speciality coffee. This saw the creation of the first speciality coffee roastery in Germany, Royal Dinner Mokka.
The current, sixth-generation has been operating since 2012, and under the keen eye of Lutz Reinhart-van Gülpen, it brings a contemporary and fresh approach to coffee processing, with the know-how and tradition of a century-old brand. Each batch is meticulously observed, documented, analysed and tested with the aim to bring their customers the best possible coffee experience.
