The Kibingo washing station in the village of Kayanza, located in northern Burundi at 1,893 metres above sea level, is not just a coffee processing site, but a centre for social, economic and environmental innovation. The washing station here works directly with more than 3 500 farmers from the surrounding eighteen hills, buying most of the coffee cherries from them at fair prices. As a result, the living standards of the farming families are significantly improved. The station organizes extensive training to help farmers not only with coffee farming, but also with gender equality, family planning and financial literacy. In addition, farmers can use organic fertilizers, affordable seedlings and participate in programs aimed at increasing yields and improving productivity.
Kibingo also addresses Burundi's major problem of high youth unemployment. Young agronomy graduates here are given job opportunities, career development, accommodation and health care, and ensure high quality coffee through modern agronomic practices. Environmental sustainability is a priority for the station - all the energy for operation comes from solar panels that supply electricity for computers, lighting and telephones. The station is also equipped with wastewater treatment plants to minimize the environmental impact of production. In short, Kibingo is a place where exceptional coffee means better living conditions for the local community and care for the planet.
Washed coffee processing means that the cherries are mechanically stripped of their skins and some of their flesh, then fermented in tanks of water for 1 to 2 days. They are then washed and dried on African beds for 3 to 6 weeks, resulting in a clean, fresh coffee with a beautifully balanced flavour and pleasant fruity acidity.
